You might have heard about the different ways that abortion can affect you physically and mentally, but what you won’t often hear about is how the abortion procedure affects the baby. This is because the abortion industry works hard to cover up these facts since they profit from your decision to have an abortion.

We’re so glad you’re asking these kinds of tough questions—because only when you know the answers will you be able to make a fully informed decision for yourself.

Read on to learn more about what happens to the baby during an abortion (or contact Choices today to find a safe space to talk and find answers).

What Happens to the Baby During a Medical Abortion?

A medical abortion, also known as the “abortion pill,” involves taking two different drugs.

Mifepristone is taken first. It blocks progesterone in your body. Without this essential hormone, your uterine lining—which is the baby’s nutrient-rich home—will loosen and shed.

Eventually, your baby will be forced to detach from the uterine lining. Without that source of nourishment, your baby will eventually starve to death.

Then, misoprostol, the second drug, will cause uterine contractions that will expel your baby out through your vagina.

While some babies will die before being forced from the uterus, some women have reported that their babies still had a heartbeat and arm/leg movements after being expelled.

What Happens to the Baby During a Surgical Abortion?

Surgical abortion is done in a clinical setting and involves dilating the cervix so that medical instruments can enter the uterus to terminate the pregnancy.

Earlier in pregnancy, a vacuum is used to suck the baby out of the uterus. Depending on the size of the baby, he or she won’t entirely fit in the vacuum, which will result in the baby being sucked apart piece by piece.

Later in pregnancy, the abortionist will inject a drug into the baby’s heart to stop it. Then, parts of the baby will be pulled out one by one using forceps.
