If you recently had an abortion, or are pregnant and considering an abortion, it’s important to be aware of the warning signs of an infection after an abortion.

Types of Abortion

There are two types of abortion, and both are serious medical procedures that require the guidance of trained medical professionals.

The first type of abortion is called medical abortion, also known as “the pill.” This type of  abortion uses a series of pills to end your pregnancy and force your body to expel the pregnancy from your body through your vagina.

The other type of abortion is called medical abortion. This is an invasive medical procedure in which a doctor removes your pregnancy by inserting medical devices into your vagina, including a suction tube, to remove your pregnancy from your uterus.

Signs of Infection

An infection after an abortion can be serious and can cause long-term health problems if not treated promptly. Some of the warning signs of an infection include:

  1. Fever: A fever is one of the most common signs of an infection after an abortion. If you have a fever for more than 24 hours, it is important to seek medical attention right away.
  2. Pain and discomfort: Abdominal pain and cramping, pain and discomfort in the pelvic area or lower back pain, can be normal. If the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms, it is important for you to seek immediate medical attention.
  3. Heavy bleeding: Abnormal bleeding, such as heavy or prolonged bleeding, is a sign of an infection after an abortion. If you are experiencing heavy bleeding, it is important to seek medical attention right away. If you are saturating or filling a peri pad in 1 hour or less, that is considered abnormal and you should seek medical attention immediately.
  4. Discharge: An abnormal discharge, especially if it has a strong odor, is a sign of an infection. If you experience this symptom, it is important to seek medical attention.

If you have had an abortion and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention right away to protect your health.
