Why do I need an ultrasound? This is one of the biggest questions we get from our clients. There are two main reasons ultrasounds are completely necessary during pregnancy.

  • Ultrasounds determine how far along a woman is in her pregnancy. This timeline determines the choices available to the woman.
  • During the ultrasound appointment, a nurse will determine the viability of the pregnancy. The nurse will also check if the pregnancy is ectopic which if it is, could lead to a life-threatening situation for the mother.

WHAT IS AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY?

Normally, when an egg is fertilized it attached to the lining of the uterus. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, this does not occur. The fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main activity of the uterus. This type of pregnancy most often occurs in the fallopian tube but can also happen in the ovary, abdominal cavity or the cervix.

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT TO KNOW?

The fertilized egg could potentially not survive an ectopic pregnancy and can cause life-threatening situations for the mother as well.

SYMPTOMS OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCY

Below are some symptoms of ectopic pregnancies. Every woman’s pregnancy is different and these symptoms can occur even in a normal pregnancy.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting from the pain
  • Pain on one side of your body
  • Dizzinesses
  • Weakness
  • Pain in your shoulder, neck, or rectum
  • Sharp abdominal cramps
