Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

Choices offers medical consultations with one of our nurses before and after your ultrasound appointment. This gives patients the chance to ask questions and discuss your pregnancy and health.

A positive pregnancy test is only an indication of a possible pregnancy. Our medical professionals recommend an ultrasound to confirm. The Mayo Clinic states that 10 to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.

The percentage is possibly higher because many women miscarry before realizing they are pregnant. You can still get a positive pregnancy test result days or even weeks after the miscarriage.

An ultrasound is the best way to determine if you miscarried or have a viable (growing) pregnancy.

What Will Ultrasound Show Me?

There are three critical reasons to have an ultrasound.

1. Is The Pregnancy Viable?

Viability means your pregnancy is growing and has a detectable heartbeat. If no heartbeat is detected, it’s too early in your pregnancy, or you have most likely miscarried. Most miscarriages occur early in a pregnancy. We recommend you visit your health care provider if a miscarriage is a possibility.

2. Where is The Pregnancy Located?

Although somewhat rare, some pregnancies implant outside the uterus. This is a tubal or ectopic pregnancy, most likely implanted in the fallopian tubes leading to the uterus. Only an ultrasound can detect this life-threatening pregnancy issue.

3. What Is The Gestational Age?

The gestational age of the pregnancy refers to how many days or weeks a woman has been pregnant. If you are considering abortion, how far along you are in your pregnancy determines the method the abortion provider uses.

Note: We do not explore or diagnose specific fetal anomalies, nor do we determine the gender of the baby.
