STD Testing & What To Expect At Your Appointment

STD/STI screening is only available during a urine pregnancy test appointment.

Is It Possible You Have An STD/STI?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been on the rise. The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) reports data is limited due to the pandemic, but it’s clear STDs/STIs are continuing to be a growing health concern in our nation.

If you are sexually active, it is very possible you could or already have contracted an STD/STI. At Choices, STD/STI screening is easy and offered at no cost.

How Do I Get An STD/STI?

According to the Mayo Clinic, the bacteria, viruses, or parasites that cause sexually transmitted diseases or infections can pass from person to person in blood, semen, vaginal, and other bodily fluids. It is even possible to give or get an STD/STI from certain skin-to-skin contact.

How Do I Know If I Have An STD/STI?

There are often no immediate symptoms of an STD/STI, which is why many people wait to get tested. You could already have one, receive one, or give an STD/STI to someone else and never know it until it’s too late. With or without symptoms, the disease still spreads from person to person.

Possible Signs

There are possible signs to indicate an STD/STI:

  • Sores or bumps on the genitals or in the oral or rectal area
  • Painful or burning urinating
  • Discharge/odor
  • Lower abdominal pain

Gonorrhea

This common STD/STI can cause infections in the genitals, throat, and rectum. Men and women of all ages can contract gonorrhea, but it is widespread among 15 to 24-year-olds. Learn more about gonorrhea.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia poses serious risks to women, mainly because it can cause permanent damage to their reproductive system. It can lead to infertility or a potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside the womb). Learn more about chlamydia.

Trichomoniasis

“Trich” is a common parasitic infection. Diagnosis can be challenging, as 70% of cases show no symptoms. Learn more about trichomoniasis.

Treatment

Treatment is recommended and provided for you at no cost with a positive diagnosis. If your partner(s) test positive, ask them to call or text Choices at 423-892-0803 to schedule an appointment to begin treatment.

Test of Cure (TOC)

We recommend a re-test three weeks after completion of your medication to ensure you have been successfully treated.
