In a recent article, Does Abortion Affect Fertility?, we talked about some potential complications of abortion that could physically affect you long-term. One health risk that we didn’t talk about is endometritis. Although antibiotics can treat endometritis, getting prompt treatment is essential.
Let’s review this condition and look at some of the effects it can have on your physical health.
What Is Endometritis?
Endometritis [pronounced “en-doh-muh-TRY-tis”] is an inflammation of the inner lining of your uterus due to infection. It can start suddenly and only last a short time, or it can last a long time.
It is caused by a bacterial infection in your uterus, which can occur after a surgical procedure, childbirth, or STI.
What Are the Symptoms?
The symptoms of endometritis include the following:
- Fever.
- Pelvic pain.
- Vaginal bleeding or discharge.
- Constipation or pain with bowel movements.
- Swelling in your abdomen.
- General unwell feeling.
What Happens If I Don’t Receive Treatment?
Untreated endometritis can lead to more serious infections and complications, including:
- Infertility.
- Pelvic infection.
- Pelvic or uterine abscesses.
- An infection in your blood (Septicemia).
Who’s at Risk for Endometritis?
If you’ve had a medical procedure involving your cervix (which leads to the uterus), you may be at risk. Procedures might include:
- Dilation and curettage (D&C).
- Dilation and evacuation (D&E).
- A C-section.
- Placement of an IUD (intrauterine device).
- An abortion. The Cleveland Clinic states that a medical abortion can also cause an infection.
- Surgery on your uterus or cervix.
How Can Choices Assist Me?

Choices screens for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and syphilis. Our free and confidential screenings are available when you schedule a urine pregnancy test appointment.
We care about your health and safety. Take the precautions necessary to protect your overall well-being. If you’ve recently had an abortion, come to Choices for a free follow-up exam, or schedule an STI screening.
