If you’re looking for a safe space to talk and find free essential pregnancy services, contact Choices today. All of our services are confidential and free.

1. The Abortion Pill Is a Combination of Two Powerful Drugs

Unlike its name would imply, the abortion pill is actually a combination of two powerful drugs.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the naturally occurring hormone progesterone, which is essential during pregnancy. When progesterone is blocked, your uterine lining will loosen and shed, and your pregnancy will eventually detach and end.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes your uterus to contract, expelling the terminated pregnancy out through your vagina.

2. You Will Experience Bleeding and Pain

After taking misoprostol (the second drug), you will experience vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping. While you might have heard that the pain will be similar to a period, this isn’t true for all women. In fact, many women have reported that the pain they felt was “unexpectedly severe.”

3. You Might See Your Expelled Embryo/Fetus

Once you take the abortion drugs, part of the process is that the embryo/fetus will be expelled out through your vagina. Many women are disturbed to see what looks like a tiny baby instead of a clump of cells and tissue.
