Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS)
Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome occurs after an abortion and can be experienced by both men and women. Symptoms are similar to those in any post-traumatic stress disorder and may involve psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual distress. Basically, it is the personal struggle to work through thoughts and feelings about an abortion. The ultimate goal is to come to peace with those involved in the decision to end the life of a child. Reactions to an abortion will vary from person to person, but everyone involved in the decision will be changed by it. One of our clients said of their abortion experience, “I came to the clinic through the front door. I left through the back door, a different person.”
Common symptoms of Post Abortion Stress Syndrome
- Emotionally cold and unresponsive
- Suicidal impulses
- Alcohol and/or drug use
- Eating Disorders
- Anxiety over fertility and childbearing issues
- Loss of interest in sex OR increased sexual activity or high risk behavior
- Avoidance of baby reminders (like baby showers, baby stores, etc.)
- Over-protection of living children
- Pre-occupation with becoming pregnant again
- Strained relationship/struggle bonding with living children
- Resentment toward those who were involved in the abortion decision
- Remembering the anniversary of the abortion or due date
Symptoms of Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome will vary, and those affected by abortion will not possess all signs of the syndrome. Some people’s symptoms surface immediately, while other’s may not surface for years following the abortion.
